Dash cameras are mounted on windshields to record the road ahead. In a severe frontal collisions, the windshield is often the first casualty and so is the camera attached to it.

When a dash camera is physically damaged - by fire, water, or impact - the cloud upload that would have preserved the pre-impact video may never complete. The data is not in the portal. The device is destroyed. The assumption is that the video is lost with it.

What's actually inside a dash camera
Modern commercial dash cameras - Samsara included - aren't simple recording devices. They run Android-based operating systems on internal hardware that includes an embedded multimedia card, or eMMC. Think of it as a miniature storage chip soldered to the circuit board - the same fundamental technology as the SD card on your desk, but embedded directly into the device. When the camera housing is destroyed, that chip frequently isn't.
The eMMC is where the data lives. And it survives conditions that destroy everything around it more often than most people expect.
Getting to the data when the device won't cooperate
Connecting a USB cable to a damaged dash camera and hoping for a download isn't a forensic methodology - it's wishful thinking. When the device is damaged beyond conventional operation, chip-off acquisition is a approach that actually works.
The process involves disassembling the module, identifying the eMMC chip on the circuit board, and using a hot air rework station to remove it from the board without damaging the chip itself. Once removed, the chip is placed into an SD card adapter and connected to a write blocker - a device that allows forensic reading of the chip without altering its contents. A bit-for-bit forensic image of the chip is then acquired, preserving everything on it exactly as it existed at the time of acquisition.
What the data actually contains
A forensic image of a Samsara eMMC contains approximately sixty partitions. Most of them hold system files - operating system components, boot files, and camera firmware - that have little to no evidentiary value. Two partitions are where the investigation actually happens.
The first is the identity partition. It holds hexadecimal data that uniquely identifies the camera - serial numbers, MAC addresses, device-specific identifiers that tie the recovered data to the specific unit in question. Chain of custody starts here.
The second is the user data partition. This is where the video and logs live, organized across three directories.
Samsara cameras typically record in two streams simultaneously - high-resolution video and a secondary low-resolution stream. Depending on the camera configuration and available storage, anywhere from twenty to over three hundred hours of video can be stored locally on the device. Recordings are saved as one-minute files in a proprietary format that converts to standard mp4 with common forensic tools. Like most dashcam systems, storage operates on a loop - older recordings are overwritten as capacity is reached, which is why device preservation time matters.
The most significant category of video in a damage scenario is in-progress recordings. These are clips that were actively recording when power was lost - either from the crash itself or from post-crash damage. Because the recording never completed, these files were never flagged for cloud upload and never transmitted. They exist only on the device. If the device is written off without forensic examination, they're gone.
The log directory documents device events independently of the video files - power cycles, upload activity, saved clip triggers, system events. In scenarios where the video itself is damaged or overwritten, the logs can reconstruct a timeline of device behavior around the incident. Whether the camera was operational at the moment of impact, whether a cloud upload was attempted, whether video was actively recording when power was lost - the logs often answer these questions even when the video doesn't.
